I am sure we all love our beautiful city, but sometimes it is nice to get away for a day or two. One of the things I love about living in Charlotte is its convenient proximity to numerous destinations: Asheville, Riverbanks Zoo in Columbia, Raleigh, and my personal favorite – Charleston! Charleston has a special place in my heart and is a city that lives deep in my blood. For this reason, coupled with others (family), we make the quick and easy 3-3.5 hour drive quite often. It just so happens that spring and summer are the BEST times to go, and one of our favorite things is right around the corner!
From May 22nd through June 7th, Charleston is home to the Piccolo Spoleto Festival. If you have never been, I highly encourage you to make plans to head down for some sun, art, music, dancing and awesome food! Piccolo Spoleto is the ultimate arts festival and truly has something for everyone. One of our favorites is always the art vendors in Marion Square. The talent is incredible and I am awestruck by it every year! Of course, there are activities for all ages, including a Childrens Carnival, kids’ programs at the library, family day at Marion Square (yay!) and even a sand sculpting contest out on Isle of Palms. All the information can be found here.
In addition to all the activities surrounding the festival, there are a myriad of other things to enjoy with your kiddos. The South Carolina Aquarium is an awesome detour and boasts some amazing views! On our itinerary this year (and new to us) is the Children’s Museum, as well as hitting up Waterfront Park so our kids can play in the fountain. And who can forget the beaches?! There are lots of them and plenty of sand and water for loads of fun!
We hope to see you there during Spoleto, or really any other time of the year! Happy adventuring out of Charlotte and taking some much needed family time away from the daily grind!
